First-Timers’ Guide to the Tough Stump Rodeo 2026: Plan Ahead, Ride Ready

First time at the Tough Stump Rodeo? Welcome to the most hands-on drone and ATAK technology field exercise in the country. We’re glad you’re here, and we want to make sure you show up prepared. Here’s everything you need to know before TSR 2026.

Plan Ahead: Book Your Lodging in Alder, Montana Early

The Tough Stump Rodeo takes place in Alder, Montana – it’s a stunning rural setting that’s part of the experience, but also means lodging fills up fast. Don’t wait until the last minute.

Nearby options include small motels, vacation rental homes, and BLM land available for camping. For more dining, shopping, and amenities, Ennis, Montana (roughly an hour away) is your closest hub for anything you might need during the week.

Things To Do: Make the Most of Southern Montana

TSR runs for three full days, but if you can swing it, arriving early or staying late is absolutely worth it. Southern Montana in June is hard to beat.

While you’re in the area, consider a scenic drive down to Yellowstone National Park, taking in some of the best fly fishing in the country (Ennis is widely known as the fly-fishing capital of Montana), or booking a ranch or outdoor adventure experience. The weather in June is typically beautiful, making it ideal for exploring the region.

For a guided experience, Upper Canyon Outfitters can set you up with fishing guides, ranch activities, and outdoor excursions — whether you’re a seasoned angler or picking up a rod for the first time.

Rules of the Rodeo: Keeping TSR Safe and Respectful

We keep the rules simple at the Tough Stump Rodeo, but they matter. Here’s what every attendee needs to know:

  1. Be a good human. That covers most of it.
  2. Respect the land and the cowboys. You’re a guest in this environment.
  3. If you open a gate, close the gate. Always.
  4. Stay alert to natural hazards. Montana is wild country. Be aware of snakes, mountain lions, bears, and rapidly changing weather conditions, especially if you’re venturing off-site.

Safety and mutual respect are what make the Rodeo a great experience year after year.
