IFF (Identification of Friendly or Foe):
In the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, 49 of the 280 Israeli Defense Forces casualties, as of May 2024, resulted from friendly fire or misidentification. Modern warfare often creates chaotic ground situations, making it challenging to accurately identify friendly forces amid the “fog of war.” Airstrikes, tank shelling, artillery, gunfire, and drone strikes all demand precise deconfliction. However, the lack of critical information frequently leads to tragic, avoidable mistakes.
The ATOS (Android Tactical Object Surveillance) system solves this problem. This compact device, about the size of a thumb, transmits GPS data via UHF radio band to friendly forces. The ATAK (Android Tactical Awareness Kit) application then displays this data on a map. By using ATOS, troops gain real-time situational awareness, allowing them to pinpoint the precise locations of friendly forces and streamline fire deconfliction.
