The Two Variants of ATOS

There are two variants of ATOS (or Android Tactical Object Surveillance), ATOS and ATOS Flight. Both of the variants use the Android Team Awareness Kit or ATAK as the backbone for the system and they both have two hardware components that run on the same software. The hardware is the Command Link and the GPS tracking tag. The software is the ATOS plug-in which is the add-on application used inside of ATAK.

The Command Link

The UHF receiver is slightly larger than a deck of cards, constructed out of machined aluminum, and is watertight and has no moving parts. It has a rechargeable battery (via USB-C) and a removable 6″ whip antenna but can be connected to a 3′ whip antenna (magnetic base) for increased reception range. The Command Link connects wirelessly to the ATAK EUD by Blue Tooth Low Energy (BLE) or via USB-C.

The ATOS Tag

An ultra-light weight ruggedized GPS receiver and UHF transmitter that runs off a rechargeable battery. The ATOS tag is roughly the size of your pinkie, weighs 1 third of an ounce and has a 6-inch thread like antenna. The tag’s GPS location is transmitted via UHF signal to the Command Link. It operates in the UHF 432-436MhZ range and has an airborne range of roughly 30 km depending upon environmental conditions. The ATOS tags send an updated position every 1 to 6 seconds and have a battery life of 4 hours. The housing is constructed of watertight machined aluminum. It has been constructed to withstand temperatures from -40 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit.

The tag’s GPS location is transmitted via UHF signal to the Command Link. It operates in the UHF 432-436MhZ range and has an airborne range of roughly 30 km depending upon environmental conditions. The ATOS tags send an updated position every 2 to 6 seconds and have a battery life of over 48 hours. The housing is constructed of watertight machined aluminum.
